About

Roger Elley-Brown

I have been working solely in private practice as a psychotherapist and counsellor for the past 24 years. In my other work lives I have been incarnated as a policy writer, self-employed lawnmower, pastor, and housepainter.

My reputation as a private practitioner in personal and relationship counselling has been described as "organic" in that my business often involves clients self-referring years later and referring friends or family members.

I specialize in relationship counselling and in this role, my work is undergirded by training in Emotion Focussed Therapy. I regularly lead Hold Me Tight workshops along with colleagues, Susan Harding and Lynne Dunphy. A word that I use to describe a lot of my client work is BALANCE. Helping clients to achieve this, in their work lives, their relationships and families is key.  A favourite saying of mine is “It takes a great deal of energy to craft a good life.”

I am a committed family person, and have been married to Margie for 36 years and we have four wonderful adult children. Building a strong relationship and family has been my life’s seminal work. The big decisions in my life have been made with the needs of my marriage and family paramount.

I love the outdoors and enjoy exploring whether it is in New Zealand or overseas. For many years I have been an avid road cyclist and have cycled extensively around New Zealand and in France. These days, as I have more discretionary time, I like nothing better than to be out walking and my current project is to section walk the Te Araroa trail accompanied by friends and family.
